​6th Grade Admissions for 2019-20
The incoming 6th grade admissions test will be administered on January 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, 2019.  The test will begin at roughly 3:15 and will end around 4:45-5:00.  Families of all 5th grade applicants will receive an email with a SPECIFIC DATE assignment on January 2nd or 3rd.

Requirements
  • All students applying must either currently reside in District 3 or be enrolled in a District 3 public elementary school.
  • Applicants must sit for the Booker T. admission test to be given in Winter 2019.
  • Although they will not be used a primary means of assessment, all students applying must have 4th grade NY State ELA and Math scores. (Students applying from independent schools should submit ERBs to Booker T. Washington as soon as possible. Please contact Booker T. Washington if you have neither state scores or ERBs.)
  • Applicants who were residing in another state during their fourth grade year must submit standardized test results from that state to Booker T. Washington as soon as possible.

Families who are interested in applying to Booker T. Washington MS54 should consult their school's guidance counselor or the Family Welcome Center for information about deadlines for submitting applications. ​

Booker T. Washington Overview
Curriculum:
Humanities: All students take an integrated English/social studies course each year. Emphasis is placed on writing, reading and research skills.
Math: Students take Pre-Algebra, followed by Algebra. Students in accelerated math classes complete the Algebra Regents curriculum.
Science: Life science (6th grade,) physical science (7th grade,) and earth science (8th grade.)
Music:  The music courses include band, strings and chorus.
Electives: Drama, film, visual arts, public speaking, debate and technology
Foreign Languages: French, Spanish, Mandarin, Latin
Physical Education

Accelerated Programs:
Honors classes on all grade levels.
Regents Classes:  Algebra and Earth Science
Accelerated language classes in French, Spanish, Mandarin and Latin (Language Proficiency Exam can be taken at the end of eighth grade)

Targeted Supports:
Academic support is provided in the following ways:
  • Early Academy takes place twice a week before school.  During these open office hours, students meet with their teachers in small groups.
  • Homework help is provided two days a week after school.
  • Peer tutoring program is based on students providing academic support to their peers.

Social/Emotional Support is provided through:
  • Two full-time guidance counselors and one student coordinator
  • The staff of the on-site  Ryan Health Center
  • School-wide focus on Wellness
  • Homeroom based support system

Enrichment Programs:
Honors accelerated classes on every grade level   
Regents math is offered beginning in seventh grade.      
Regents science is offered in eighth grade.

Special Education:                                                                                                                                                                     
ICT classes on all grade levels          12:1:1 classes on all grade levels        Students with IEP are provided with all mandated services on-site.

English Language Learners/Dual Language:                                                                                                                           
ELL students are provided with ENL instruction and support using a push in/pull out model.

Highlights:                                                                                                                                                                           
Students are provided with multiple opportunities to accelerate during their middle school years. Students are given academic support to help them succeed in a rigorous environment. Teachers hold office hours. Students are taught to advocate for themselves and to self-monitor their need for additional academic support.                              

Extra-curricular activities have included Student Council, Newspaper Club, Debate Club, Boys and Girls Basketball Teams, Track Team, Soccer Club, Art Portfolio Program, Music Enrichment, Math Team, Model United Nations and Drama Program.

The school has a dedicated science laboratory, two computer laboratories (Apple) and a library media center (with a collection of over 35,000 materials) staffed by a full-time librarian.
